Our story — who we are & why we started

We're dog owners who got tired of guessing what to feed our dogs

SmartPupFood was built because finding honest, unsponsored dog food guidance was nearly impossible. So we built it ourselves.

"I spent three hours reading dog food labels and still wasn't sure what I was buying. There had to be a better way."

— ouahim, founder of SmartPupFood

It started with one confused dog owner and a very long ingredient list

When Mohamed got his first dog, he did what every responsible owner does — he tried to research the best food. What he found instead was a wall of affiliate sites, sponsored rankings, and contradictory advice. Every "best of" list pointed to whatever paid the most commission. So he started reading the actual research — ingredient studies, FDA recall databases, AAFCO nutrition standards, veterinary nutrition papers. He took notes. He compared brands honestly. And slowly, SmartPupFood became the site he wished had existed from the start. Today SmartPupFood reviews 80+ brands using the same independent, research-based framework — and earns zero money from brand sponsorships.

Our mission

Help every dog owner make one better decision about what goes in their dog's bowl

We believe the healthiest dog food isn't always the most expensive or the most marketed. It's the one that genuinely matches your dog's needs — and we exist to help you find it without the noise.

Honest

No brand pays to be featured or ranked on this site. Ever.

Research-based

Every review is grounded in nutrition science, not marketing claims.

Always updated

Formulas change. Recalls happen. We update when the facts change.

How we review

Our 6-step review process — applied to every single brand

We use the same framework for every dog food we evaluate — whether it's a $10 kibble or a $120/month fresh delivery service. No exceptions.

Ingredient list analysis

We read every ingredient in order of weight. Named animal proteins must appear first. We flag vague terms, hidden fillers, and artificial preservatives.

Protein quality & sourcing

We evaluate the type, origin, and digestibility of protein sources — distinguishing between whole meats, meals, and by-products, and what each means nutritionally.

AAFCO nutritional adequacy

We verify the brand meets AAFCO standards for the appropriate life stage — growth, maintenance, or all life stages — through either feeding trials or nutrient profiling.

FDA recall history check

We check the FDA's official recall database for every brand. We note the nature of the recall, the resolution, and how it affects our confidence in the brand's quality control.

Brand transparency review

We contact brands with questions about sourcing, manufacturing location, and quality testing. How a brand responds — or doesn't — tells us a lot about how much they stand behind their product.

6 Real-owner feedback analysis

We aggregate verified owner reviews across multiple platforms, filtering out manipulation patterns and focusing on long-term outcomes — coat quality, digestion, energy, and palatability.

Our editorial promise

We will never accept payment to rank, feature, or recommend a brand

SmartPupFood earns revenue through display advertising and clearly labeled affiliate links — never through sponsored reviews or paid placements. If a brand is ranked #1 on this site, it's because it earned it. That's a promise we make to every dog owner who reads our work.
